I’ve been asked to mention an event taking place online this week, and I’m happy to do so ’cause it’s for a great cause. Art Marathon is “a 24 hour art-making session to raise awareness about modern slavery and raise money for Free the Slaves, a nonprofit organization that liberates slaves and teaches them jobs skills so that they do not fall back into poverty. The artists will do their marathons at various times between Saturday, December 26 and Friday, January 1. Many of the artists will stream live video of their art as they create it.” What slaves, you ask? Well guess what, slavery is still alive and well on this planet of ours, so why not take a second and read up on the modern face of forced labor, and learn, as I have, about some of the awful realities faced by millions here in the allegedly-modern world. Art Marathon is consciousness-raising at its best, I reckon, so have a look and see what you think.
Thanks for reading, and Happy New Year! I’ll see y’alls in 2010 in some comix-related context or other.
