Good lord, I hope you weren’t too busy posting this and saw the greatest game since Man U Champions League Final 1999.

Oh, and comics are pretty sweet. I was thinking there need to be more Hut businesses. Bank of Togo Hut? Okay, maybe not.

  2. Mark Dominus Says:

I’ve always wanted to open a short-order restaurant called “Ernie’s Food Pit”.

  3. Ratazana Says:

¡Amo a la esfinge! I love that absurd mythlogic character. Keep up the good work, greetings from Madrid!

  4. Tom Says:

Hah! I was actually reading the inflight magazine for Airtran, and they had an article on how it really WAS started out of a hut!

    http://airtranmagazine.com/contents/2008/06/a-piece-of-the-pie/

So I guess this is oddly topical!

  5. Well I do strive to be oddly topical… Anyway, I just looked at the article and it was no hut, it was a “squat, brick building!” What, they couldn’t fit that on the sign?? False advertising!

And greetings to the reader from Madrid! You might be interested to know that I’m gonna be posting some comics translated into Spanish in the coming weeks. You heard it here first. Viva la esfinge!!

  6. Seva Says:

I think I saw some kind of documentary on this shit on like the history channel or something.

Apparently, the founders of pizza hut rented out a some crappy building for their first pizzeria and the sign for the building could only fit eight letters, so it had to be Pizza _ _ _. I guess “hut” was the only thing that remotely made any sense.

  7. Michael Ezra Says:

Re Tom and Seva: Too bad the hapless employee in this week’s strip didn’t have your command of fast food history.

That said, the Sphynx is awfully literal, isn’t she? Not that I’d ever say that to her face, unless maybe I’d just been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

  8. being half italian I can only express some of the rage and indignation that i feel knowing that the americas have stolen our traditional dish and marketed it to death!
    Give us our pizza back!
We stole it from the Greeks first, goddamit! 😉
great comic, by the way. I’d totally ask the sphynx out (even if it did end up in her eating me)
thanks very much for the link aswell!

  9. Camille Says:

Nice one! I’ve always wondered about that as well. Kinda ridiculous to call a pizza chain a hut, why would you do pizzas in a hut anyway? And it sounds even more ridiculous here in France because no one knows you’re supposed to say it [hŭt]

  10. Clarence Boddicker Says:

This is off topic, and might be old news, but I just had to post it.

    Sorry Winston.

(Also, no editing posts? I hope this works the first time. I don’t even know if you can post links/images in comments…)

  11. Clarence Boddicker Says:

Okay, one other thing. Your Pizza Hut Sphinx would look rather excellent on a Pizza Hut box, no?

    http://www.pizzaboxidea.com/

    Selling out? Of course.

The first one pictured under the “See the prizes” link is…well, I won’t say “sphinx-like”, but there’s a resemblance.

  12. Robert B Says:

Hooray! Finally, another Sphynx strip! We want more Sphynx! We love Sphynx! I swear it! Really! 🙂

  13. This is off topic, and might be old news, but I just had to post it.

Oh jesus fucking christ, you just had to dig up a picture of that, didn’t you!! DON’T CLICK ON THE LINK HE POSTED ABOVE!!! AIEEE!!! I watched that game, and they put a camera on him and he was in the crowd slipping on a Wings jersey and I just about lost it. We lost that game, for obvious reasons. Any team that can overcome chad kroeger cheering for it deserves all the trophies it can get.

PS: No selling out!! They can design their own goddamn boxes. Friggin’ pizza hut.

PPS: As for editing posts/posting images etc., I’ll have to get back to you on that one. Much like the second Death Star, this little operation here is kind of half-built.

Hooray! Finally, another Sphynx strip! We want more Sphynx! We love Sphynx! I swear it! Really!

Yeah, it was about time. That was the second-longest wait between Sphynx comics, and I shall endeavor to narrow the gap between now and the next one.

Kinda ridiculous to call a pizza chain a hut, why would you do pizzas in a hut anyway?

Well said! Their pizza sucks too, to top it all off.

thanks very much for the link aswell!

No problem. Dude makes some wicked bananas.

  14. Rodrigo Oliva Says:

Im not trying to tell you how to do your job but i had difficulty figuring out the right progression of panels to read at first. Hope that helps you make more awesome comics.

    thanks

  15. chacharles Says:

the dude didn’t know why it was called pizza hut? shouldn’t they know their employer’s history?

    good point though

  16. Im not trying to tell you how to do your job but i had difficulty figuring out the right progression of panels to read at first. Hope that helps you make more awesome comics.

    Duly noted.

  17. Robin Moshe Says:

You know at first I liked the Sphinx as a character, I thought she was just a rational person with a short temper who was indignant about the world ignoring her personal issues…

…but more and more I’m starting to think that she’s just a huge jerk. A monster, even.

I think the Sphinx needs a foil. (Or foils) Someone less hypocritical than her but not necessarily much nicer, like a legendary hero on a quest to slay her, or another monster who’s chosen to become vegan and is always needling her, or perhaps a semi-oblivious human who refuses to be intimidated by her- say, an armed police officer who tries to arrest her for disturbing the peace and doesn’t hesitate to tazer her. Perhaps a Crocodile-Hunter-esque archaeologist determined to study her?

  18. l.k.j. Lil Says:

Ello, I’m a big fan of your work and i just wanted to ask if you’d let me put this picture of Sphinx on a t-shirt?
Your name would be on it as well and the website address. (:
It’d just be a shirt for me, and not resold etc.

  19. I sort of agree with Robin… but I’d just write in a love interest for her (who could be a hero or another monster like Robin suggested)

I just thought it could be cool. I’m a hopeless romantic.

Definitely a monster, but maybe not a jerk. She just sees the world from the top of the food chain. Your further suggestions are interesting. I first read “armed police officer” as “one-armed police officer” though, so that was a laugh. Anyway, it’s all good stuff for the mental rolodex, and I once again appreciate your thoughtful reactions.

I just thought it could be cool. I’m a hopeless romantic.

Again, the suggestions are interesting. She ain’t dating that manticore from the “monsters playing poker” comic though.

  21. Innominate Says:

Hut (ns): 1 a small and crudely built house, usually made of wood. 2 a small temporary dwelling.

    http://www.chambersharrap.co.uk/chambers/features/chref/chref.py/main?title=21st&query=hut

Seems like definition 2 fits the bill perfectly. The building that spawned the franchise was certainly very much in the spirit of the hut.

As an aside, I’d like to mention an Irish law firm, “Argue & Phibbs”. Almost uncharacteristic honesty, no?

  22. Sebass Says:

    Yo chief,

your banner, which features a pissed-off sphinx, does not create the right impression of your comic at all. your comic is intelligent and whimsical, a pissed-off sphinx is strange and unsettling. you need to change the way either the sphinx represents your comic, or your mascot altogether. I looked at your banner for at least five months without clicking it, only to find (when bored enough) an excellent comic of a caliber i never expected. market, dude, let us know you’re there.

    peace

I appreciate your work greatly, keep it up!

    Sebass

  23. I looked at your banner for at least five months without clicking it

Where was this banner, incidentally? Thinking Ape Blues? Thanks for the advice and the kind words, anyway–I appreciate it. I shall indeed keep it up.

As an aside, I’d like to mention an Irish law firm, “Argue & Phibbs”. Almost uncharacteristic honesty, no?

    Indeed. I wonder if there’s a “Liar & Crook” out there somewhere…

  24. Questo's Dad Says:

Dewey, Cheatem and Howe is the one I always think of.

  25. Rob Retter Says:

Okay, you’re blowing my mind now.

Not only did you create a new Sphynx strip (yay!), but you actually put into the dialog:

    “…. a business’ name ….”

An apostrophe *correctly* used! Not as part of a plural (grr!) or even with a redundant ‘s’ (not quite grr-level annoyance, maybe a hrmph! kinda error).

Are you sure what you did is even *allowed* on the Interporn?

  26. I don’t think it IS allowed. The internet does thing’s a certain way, and maybe I shouldn’t get in it’s way.

    /deliberate typos

  27. aph Says:

in Poland we (sometimes) call it Pizda Huj (pizda = cunt, Huj, or chuj to be exact, = dick) 😉

  28. Awesome comic! It really gets you thinking about the meaning behind it. Well done!

  29. bachterman Says:

that sphinx chick is “hut”… 😉

  30. LuisLarrea Says:

Where did this site come from?

  31. InfectedDaemon Says:

Sphinx rocks! Up till now almost all the comics from viruscomix are awesome. Keep it up!

  32. Pregnancy Says:

I definitely do not want to be lunch! sorry.

  33. uh oh, she’s a man-eater lol

  34. Chen Says:

    Unbelievable.

“Pizza Hut to try ‘Pasta Hut’:”
    http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/DN-pizzahut_26bus.State.Edition1.394a389.html

I saw this headlines today and of course thought of this comic.

They said that the name was temporarily changed in order to advance a new pasta line they were offering, but I see the Sphynx’ paw prints all over this. I didn’t know she lived in Dallas!

  35. Tyson Says:

I wonder if this qualifies as product placement…

  36. sean Says:

    I really like your sphinx.
I am glad I found your web comic.
I sent the url to a group I like.

  37. Jesse C. Says:

Well, according to a place mat from a Pizza Hut I was in once, the origin of the name is as followed. Ahem. ‘When Blah and Blah, Pizza Hut’s founders, were founding the first restaurant, after painting the word PIZZA on the sign, they saw they still had room for three more letters. They decided on HUT, and that lazy, unimaginative name has stuck ever since.’ Or something like that. I forget.

    • basiamc Says:

Yes, I read that someplace, too. I think the building was somewhat hut-shaped because there was an ugly air conditioning unit on the top. WAIT! No! That was jack-In-the-Box. That’s why they named Jack-in-the-Box that, because they wanted to cover up a big ugly air conditioning box on the top of the building, so they put that signage around it and I guess a fake Jack or something.

      Cough. Anyways. You’re correct.

    • Greenwood Goat Says:

When the Carney brothers started the business in Wichita, Kansas, their premises came with a neon sign left by the previous owner – a modular, reconfigurable one. They were able to make the word “PIZZA”, possibly turning a letter “N” or two on their sides to do it, but were left with a limited selection of letters after that. “HUT” was the least worst combination they could make.

All of which goes to show that the English-speaking peoples of the world aren’t always bothered about what things are called. Look at the Nintendo Wii: the initial reaction was “Oooo-er, it’s a synonym for urine! *snigger*”, but now it has become normalized in our awareness. Same with Nintendo’s first blockbuster, “Donkey Kong”. (Note to self: do *not* visit amusement arcade with sphynx.)

  38. 30 bucks Says:

    i win the game

  39. Antara Says:

It’s great to see the sphinx finally depicted as what she is. An intelligent, whimsical and curious person rather than a man eater. I agree with Robin as well, a love interest for her would add more dimension to her character.

Till then, awesome comic. I love the work you’ve done on it.

  40. Officer Powers Says:

Could be it originated in a Quonset hut structure? They were cheap military surplus after WW2.

  41. Officer Powers Says:

OK, I just went back and read the posts. I feel like a moron now. Pizza Brick sounds neat, though.

  42. Blaine Says:

Sphinx is hot! I’d fuck sphinx!

  43. Blaine Says:

    Sorry “sphynx”

  44. celestial-salamander Says:

the way the sphinx he going around openly threatening people, one would think she would have been arrested by now.

    • Brennan Barrington Says:

They’ve tried to stop or kill her before, it’s never worked. In this world, death by monster is just part of life. There seems to be a tacit agreement between humans and monsters that monsters won’t kill too many people or do too much damage, and humans won’t try too hard to destroy them.

  45. Blaine Says:

Who the hell is going to try and arrest a 14 foot tall demigod with claws?

  46. Shem Lucas Says:

I absolutely love the Sphynx and her inability to deal with modern businesses, in fact i love all of the strips, they are such a pleasure to read!

  47. Tyciol Says:

    I ❤ Sphynx-chan

  48. Why it reads “you´re breakfast” on the sphynx’s picture?

  49. tevra1 Says:

I luuuuve sphinxy and would gladly join her in a meal at the Suburban Monster Buffet
